With Big Brother 26 coming to an end, executive producers Allison Grodner and Rich Meehan have to actually be feeling quite nice — and yes, that is rare for this show. At times towards the end, seasons tend bring in mixed reactions from fans, or are mired in controversy somewhere along the way.
But this time around season 26 entertained less drama on social media compared to the past few years, even though the action slowed down a little at the end, you can say that this was one of the best seasons in quite some time that also had the best winner in arguably the past several years in Chelsie. The show can be riding high for now.
Well, One thing that did seem to work perfectly in season 26 was the AI Arena, which did create an element of chaos on the eviction nights and also led to a lot of different strategic thinking. So is there a chance that the twist could return? The simple answer here is yes.
In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Meehan and Grodner discussed plans for Big Brother 27, including the "AI Arena" twist returning in a different format. They also discussed the origin of the twist. The producers recognized that Thursday’s episodes needed some innovation. According to them, Thursday's live shows had become stale ever since the Head of Household competitions were removed from live episodes. So the twist was to make the eviction nights unpredictable and also give live feeders still a reason to watch.
The Big Brother producers also revealed that "Reindeer Games" also contributed to the creation of the AI Arena twist.
Speaking about the intentions and outcome of the AI Arena, Meehan made the following statement to EW:
"It made the live show more unpredictable. It created kind of a must-see event of what’s going to happen, and hopefully it was part of the reason why we didn’t have one-sided votes. The live show was more dramatic. From a viewer’s perspective, you never know what’s going to happen, which is really the goal."
Ending their interview Grodner confirmed plans to bring back the AI Arena twist but different from the one of season 26 implying that a three player nomination format with a Thursday night fight to save yourself comp could become a staple in the franchise, similar to the Veto comp.
"I think the AI arena was a big success, and we’ve learned a lot from it, I think it’s something that as we look towards the summer, nothing’s ever going to be exactly the same. We love mixing things up. But I think the essence of that, it’s very likely to be carried forward."
For that, We would argue that in general, the twist was relatively successful. We would feel a bit different if the AI Arena was unfairly physical, but most of the competitions there were well-balanced so that anyone could win them.
So are you glad that the AI Arena twist could be back, although in a different format, on Big Brother 27? Share your thoughts in the comment section.
